Empowering incarcerated women through compassion and action.
In a caring effort to understand the struggles of women behind bars, a recent visit was made to Hindi Prison in Lamu. The aim was to witness the challenges these women face every day and to explore ways they can be supported in their healing, rehabilitation, and return to society. The program, called Hedhi Salama Lamu, was initiated and supported by Hon. PS Abubakar Hassan (Kwiji).
The Lamu Women Empowerment Network (LAWEN) team, led by Executive Director Lynette Apondi Aloo, recently visited Hindi Prison in Lamu to better understand the real challenges women face while serving time. During the visit, they listened to the women’s stories, saw the struggles they go through each day, and learned how deeply prison life affects their hopes and future. The experience inspired LAWEN to explore stronger ways of standing with these women by advocating for their rehabilitation, offering support, and helping them find a fresh start once they return to the community.
During the visit, the team saw many struggles the women face every day. they don't even have enough beds to sleep on or sanitary pads to manage their health with dignity. On top of that, there was little access to education, job training, or mental health support. Many women said they want to change their lives for the better, but they do not have the chance or the tools to do so. The Lamu Women Empowerment Network (LAWEN), led by Executive Director Lynette Apondi Aloo, is committed to helping fill these gaps by creating simple, practical programs that bring hope, respect, and real opportunities for a fresh start.
While talking with the prison staff, the Lamu Women Empowerment Network (LAWEN) team, led by Executive Director Lynette Apondi Aloo, explored ways to work together to bring in skills training and counseling. LAWEN also shared that they will seek support from their partners to make this possible. The goal is to give the women a chance to learn, heal, and regain their confidence so they are ready for a brighter future once they leave prison.
LAWEN’s visit to Hindi Prison is only the beginning. The team is working on new plans to support women in Prison, such as pushing for better living conditions, offering legal help, and creating programs that can guide them back into the community. By making sure their voices are heard, LAWEN hopes to bring real and lasting change to their lives.
